Wicked, the untold story of The Witches of OZ, broadway musical

I was supposed to blog about myself volunteering for the 2008 Melbourne University Open Day again, this time with the Faculty of Science. But, no, that would be the boring repetitive post from last year, filling balloons, tying them on railings surrounding the campus, directing prospective students and their families to lecture halls to listen to talks, attending talks myself to find out what I want to do after my Honours year etc etc. So, cut that, I'm not going to blog about that. I'm going to blog about.....

WICKED!

No, I didn't win the Wicked lottery; but my friend won two tickets at the price of AUD 30 each, when the normal price is ~AUD 120!! What a HUGE bargain!! :) It was a last minute call - an hour before the musical started, she called me if I was interested in watching this musical. Why not? I had been eyeing on this for a very long time since another friend told me about how nice this musical was, just that it was very expensive, that I thought twice of whether to go or not. :)

What's best was that we got such a good seat - front row and in the middle! Oh, how nice! We even got to see their facial features so clearly! :P I have been skeptical in all the musicals that I've watched (read this and this) whether the casts were actually singing or were just lip-syncing from a recording, but today, I saw microphones attached on their foreheads, yes, their foreheads, well some were attached round the top of their ears, with a fine netting around their forehead, to hold the microphones in place. I also now know how those people can change their attire so fast, as if they just have a twin themselves who take turns to sing at different times while the other gets changed. I suspect that the entire piece of dress is actually sewn onto a skin colour long sleeve clothes so when they change, they just take out the entire full length piece, with their necklace "attached/sewn onto the collar of the skin colour long sleeve clothes". So that means, changing everything, dress and jewellery all at once, because I saw in every costume they wore, there was a long sleeve seen.

With Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West

With Galinda, later Glinda the Good

My oh my, the songs were so wonderful. I'm just so amazed at how they can project their voice so loud, but yet don't portray that they are screaming. Haha. The best song was "Defying Gravity" when Elphaba was actually "flying" at the top and singing her lungs out for this songs while all the camera lights were shown at her, as if she was a rising star or an angel. Oh god, so awesome!! :) Then there was this scene whereby it was really funny when Galinda was singing "Popular" when she was trying to change Elphaba's looks from a greenish person to a pretty person and make her popular. That was so cute and hilarious! Hehe. And then there was this sweet romance between Elphaba and Fiyero. Oh, so so so touching! :) Sigh, why is true love sweet romance kind of story only found in fairytales and stories?? :P

With Fiyero

I can't tell you if it was worth it to watch this musical because my ticket was ~AUD 80 cheaper, so definitely it's so so so worth it! Haha. :P You should try it if you want to have a taste of what Wicked's like. Now, I see the link between Wicked and The Wizard of OZ and now I know why there are those "weird" characters in The Wizard of OZ. I left the musical, feeling all so wicked. Niah-ha-ha-ha! :P Oh, I wish I can watch this musical again! :)
